Playing with Worker’s Basic Rights in Finland
Shopping around for social security for many of the posted workers at the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant construction site is like playing a game with people’s basic rights at stake. At the moment, roughly 500 employers employ 3,800 people at Olkiluoto 3. About 80 per cent of the workers are foreign, mainly from eastern Europe. Most of them are working in Finland on a temporary posting under a certificate for a posted employee. “In terms of earnings-related pension insurance, these employees are exceptions. In general, work is insured in the country of employment,” explains Tiia Lahti, Inspection Manager at the Finnish Centre for Pensions.
